Karam’s Story: From RONDO 3 User to Future Doctor
Karam was born with a severe hearing loss, but thanks to a cochlear implant, his world transformed from silence into sound. Today, he is a medical student in the United States, determined to become a cochlear implant surgeon and give others the same opportunity he received. Read on to discover his inspiring journey — and don’t miss his message of hope at the end.

My name is Karam, I’m from Jordan, and I was born with a severe hearing loss. Today, I’m a medical student in the United States, and I want to specialize in cochlear implantation so that I can help others the way I was helped.
My Hearing Journey
From a very early age, my parents noticed that something was different. I didn’t respond to sounds the way other children did. We tried hearing aids, but they didn’t provide the clarity I needed. Everything sounded muffled, speech was hard to understand, and even the simplest conversations were challenging. Communication was a daily struggle.
When I was four years old, after many consultations with specialists, my parents made a decision that changed the course of my life: they chose a cochlear implant for me. It wasn’t an easy decision — there were a lot of unknowns. But they held on to hope. Hearing aids hadn’t worked for me, and this was a chance for something more — for meaningful access to sound and communication.
Activation: Hearing the World for the First Time
After the surgery and recovery period, the activation came. I still remember the mix of excitement and uncertainty. Suddenly, I could hear sounds I had never truly heard before: water flowing, birds chirping, footsteps, my parents’ voices — soft and full of emotion. It wasn’t perfect at first, and it took time, patience, and consistent rehabilitation. But day by day, my hearing improved. Slowly, my world opened up. I began to understand speech, join conversations, and fully participate in life in a way I never could before.
How My Life Changed with a Cochlear Implant
Looking back, my cochlear implant changed every aspect of my life.
- At school, I could finally follow lessons, join class discussions, and learn alongside my peers with confidence.
- At home, I could connect more deeply with my family — hearing laughter, jokes, and heartfelt conversations.
- Personally, my confidence grew. The silence that once isolated me was replaced by a world full of sound and opportunity.
Not only did I get a cochlear implant, but I also imparted patience and determination. I first had a lot of trouble communicating, adapting, and even playing sports. However, nothing stopped me. I was constantly on the field with my pals, and I learned how to swim and boxing. My cochlear implant is not a barrier. It makes me feel strong and confident.

Upgrading to RONDO 3: Simplicity and Connectivity
As I got older and technology advanced, I started using the RONDO series of processors. When I switched to RONDO 3, the difference was immediate. It was lighter, more comfortable, and the sound quality was even clearer.
With wireless streaming, wireless charging, two microphones and superior hearing performance, RONDO 3 allows me to enjoy a richer, more natural experience in a variety of environments — whether I’m in a lecture hall, at a café, or walking outside.
I also enjoy the stylish design covers; I can personalize the look and feel of my processor — it’s simply an incredible audio processor.
But Bluetooth connectivity is my favorite feature. I can stream video calls and listen directly and wirelessly, without turning on the speaker thanks to the AudioStream Adapter. It’s similar to using wireless earbuds.
There is also the AudioKey 3 app, which makes it simple to change settings, monitor battery life, and stay in control wherever I go.

Why I’m Studying to Become a Cochlear Implant Surgeon
My own experience with hearing loss and cochlear implantation has shaped my future. I’m currently studying medicine in the U.S., and my goal is to specialize in cochlear implantation.
I want to give others the same gift I was given: the ability to hear, to connect, and to live without the barriers I once faced. I know firsthand how much of a difference early intervention, support, and the right technology can make — and I want to be a part of making that difference for others.
A Message of Hope
For any families going through a similar journey: know that there is hope. A cochlear implant changed my life, and with the right care, support, and determination, it can open up a world of sound and opportunity.
Thank you, Karam, for sharing your story with us!
