The History of the MED-EL Logo
From the color to the logo to the mascot, let’s take a look at the meaning of the symbols and design of the brand behind your trusted hearing loss solutions.

You probably recognize the logo above if you have a MED-EL implant. You’ve seen it on our web pages, brochures, packaging—on everything MED-EL. Do you know what the symbol in the middle represents? Time for a quick quiz question:

Scroll down to see whether you guessed correctly.

If you picked D, you’re correct! The logo actually represents a cochlear implant—MED-EL’s first cochlear implant, to be exact. Let’s dive into MED-EL’s history to find out more.
Our First Cochlear Implant on the Market
In 1989, MED-EL introduced the Comfort CI system. Over 700 adults and children received this implant, starting them on their journeys toward better hearing. Notice its shape? It’s the real inspiration for the MED-EL logo.
This symbol reminds us how far our hearing technology has come and inspires us to continue pioneering innovative hearing solutions.

Why Our History Matters to Us
From the beginning, developing the most advanced technology has been at the heart of what we do. We value research and development so we can provide our users with the closest to natural hearing.
From the first multichannel cochlear implant in 1977 to SONNET 3, our latest audio processor, our history is full of solutions for every type of hearing loss.
And Why Is MED-EL Red?
Let’s ask the woman who pioneered the modern cochlear implant and founded MED-EL: Ingeborg Hochmair.

The color red was clear from the very beginning of coming up with our first logo, as our hearts surely would be in helping people living with hearing loss.

CEO of MED-EL
So every time you see MED-EL red, we hope you think of all the “heart” we put into developing and improving hearing solutions. We don’t answer to shareholders. We answer to you.

Mellie the MED-ELephant
Every company needs a friendly, inspiring mascot! And since 2008, we’ve had Mellie the elephant. She’s a bilateral CI user, and she enjoys communicating, loud and proud! Mellie is loved by kids and adults alike.
Check out our Instagram account—sometimes Mellie shares her travel pics there.
In addition to a plushie with magnets behind her ears (perfect for keeping audio processors safe when not in use), there are also several Mellie books and other Mellie-related materials. Get in touch with your local MED-EL team if you’re interested in having your own Mellie.
