Seit ihrem achten Lebensjahr ist sie eine leidenschaftliche Musikerin. Sie spielt Klarinette und Saxophon in Holzbl\u00e4sergruppen und Orchestern. Die beidseitige Versorgung mit Cochlea-Implantaten hat ihr Leben ver\u00e4ndert: Sie kann jetzt Musik in Stereo h\u00f6ren.<\/p>\n<p>Wir haben mit ihr \u00fcber Musik und H\u00f6rverlust gesprochen und dar\u00fcber, welchen Einfluss beides auf ihr Leben hat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erz\u00e4hl uns ein bisschen \u00fcber deine H\u00f6rgeschichte: Wann hast du begonnen, ein H\u00f6rimplantat zu verwenden?<\/strong><br \/>\nIch wurde hochgradig schwerh\u00f6rig geboren und habe nie etwas anderes gekannt. Ich besuchte eine \u00f6ffentliche Schule und trug H\u00f6rger\u00e4te. Die Zeit war eine sehr anstrengende und ich hatte nie das Gef\u00fchl, wirklich dazuzugeh\u00f6ren. Als ich 13 war, bekam ich mein erstes Cochlea-Implantat. Seither blicke ich nur noch nach vorne! Obwohl ich von einem Implantat sehr profitiert habe, hatte ich immer das Gef\u00fchl, dass zwei noch besser w\u00e4ren. Zu meinem Gl\u00fcck wurden die Richtlinien in Gro\u00dfbritannien dahingehend ge\u00e4ndert, dass zwei Implantate empfohlen wurden. Nachdem ich mein erstes Cochlea-Implantat als Jugendliche bekommen hatte, erhielt ich im Alter von 23 Jahren mein zweites. Zwei zu haben ist gro\u00dfartig. Es hat eine Weile gedauert, bis beide Seiten gut zusammenarbeiteten. Heute finde ich das beidseitige Musikh\u00f6ren mit Stereoklang einfach fantastisch.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Welche Sorgen und \u00c4ngste hattest du vor der Implantation? Was hat dir dabei geholfen, mit diesen Unsicherheiten umzugehen?<\/strong><br \/>\nIch war etwas beunruhigt wegen der Operation, der rasierten Haare, der Unterrichtszeiten, die ich verpassen w\u00fcrde, und wegen der Tatsache, dass ich nur ein<br \/>\nH\u00f6rger\u00e4t tragen konnte, w\u00e4hrend ich auf die Aktivierung des Implantats wartete. Aber alles verlief reibungslos. Und vor der zweiten OP war ich nicht mehr besorgt, nur etwas aufgeregt. Als ich mein zweites Implantat bekam, gab es bereits eine neuere Operationstechnik, sodass der Schnitt viel kleiner war und deshalb kaum Haare entfernt werden mussten. Auch die Erholungszeit war viel k\u00fcrzer.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Ich h\u00f6rte ziemlich komplexe und vielschichtige Musik, was eine echte Herausforderung war, mir aber sehr dabei half, mein musikalisches Geh\u00f6r weiterzuentwickeln.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!-- <strong>What were personal challenges on your hearing journey? How did you deal with them? What helped you to overcome barriers and difficulties?<\/strong>\nI\u2019ve always had high standards for myself. I\u2019m aspirational\u2014I see something, decide I\u2019m going to do it, then I have to figure out a way! An example is seeing my older sister play a musical instrument; that was the inspiration for me learning to play the clarinet, aged eight. But that idealism has helped me through the tough times as well. The main difficulty I\u2019ve had all my life has been related to communication. I am a very sociable person and have found the barriers difficult and sad at times. The cochlear implant(s) have helped hugely, though, simply because I can hear speech so much more clearly now. I can have a conversation with a partner from a different room\u2014I could never have done that before my implant.\n\n&nbsp; --><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nWas bedeutet Musik f\u00fcr dich?<\/strong><br \/>\nMusik zu h\u00f6ren und zu machen ist ein wichtiger Bestandteil meines Lebens, seit ich klein war. Meine Eltern fanden heraus, dass ich geh\u00f6rlos war, bevor ich zu sprechen lernte. Meine Mutter verbrachte viel Zeit damit, mir vorzusingen und mir unterschiedliche Tonh\u00f6hen und Melodien n\u00e4herzubringen. Daran kann ich mich so gut erinnern, dass ich immer noch die Intervalle wei\u00df, die sie sang &#8211; Terzen und Quinten. Ich bin mir sicher, dass dieser fr\u00fche Kontakt mit Musik mir geholfen hat, klar zu sprechen und zu kommunizieren. Au\u00dferdem wurde damit eine solide Grundlage f\u00fcr die musikalische Ausbildung mit H\u00f6rger\u00e4ten und sp\u00e4ter mit einem, dann zwei Cochlea-Implantaten gelegt.<\/p>\n<p>Als Teenager spielte Musik in meinem gesamten Freundeskreis eine gro\u00dfe Rolle &#8211; wir gingen gemeinsam zu Live-Konzerten oder trafen uns zuhause und h\u00f6rten Mix-Tapes. Meine beste Freundin druckte Liedtexte aus und half mir, ihnen zu folgen, indem sie im Takt der Musik mit dem Finger auf die W\u00f6rter zeigte. Ich h\u00f6rte ziemlich komplexe und vielschichtige Musik, was eine echte Herausforderung war, mir aber sehr dabei half, mein &#8222;musikalisches Ohr&#8220; weiterzuentwickeln.<br \/>\nMeine Eltern h\u00f6rten einen Stilmix an unterschiedlicher Musik und ermutigten mich, Klarinette zu spielen. Ich legte Musikpr\u00fcfungen ab und spielte in einer Holzbl\u00e4sergruppe und einem Orchester. Es kam mir nie in den Sinn, dass es f\u00fcr eine geh\u00f6rlose Person ziemlich ungew\u00f6hnlich war, diese Dinge zu tun. Und das, obwohl ich keine anderen geh\u00f6rlosen Musiker kannte &#8211; mittlerweile aber doch.<\/p>\n<p><!-- <strong>What role did music play in your decision to seek a hearing loss solution?<\/strong>\nI was quite young when I got my first implant, and it seemed to be a logical next step. I\u2019d achieved amazing things with my hearing aids, but the benefit was \u201ccapped\u201d\u2014I was struggling to hear too much, and they were starting to hold me back. Music has been a major factor in my search for, and use of, a hearing loss solution. It was very important to me that I could hear instruments, melody, vocals, and lyrics, and not only that: to enjoy the sound\u2014music should be enjoyable!\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<strong>What is your strongest memory related to music before\/after your CI implantation?<\/strong>\nBefore my first implant, I remember making lots of mixtapes! I listened to music through in-ear headphones, which I had to crank up to full volume (not recommended for good ear\nhealth \u2026). I wanted to listen to the same music as my friends, and that meant studying it carefully and\nlearning it. After my implant, music became a much more sociable affair. I got a CD player and sound system (probably to the equal delight and dismay of my parents) and remember listening to music in my room for hours with friends around. I also started going to live gigs around this time. I could hear speech so much more clearly with my implant, so I became more outgoing and went out more often.\n\n&nbsp; --><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-36090\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.medel.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/ruth_hearpeers_mentor_cochlearimplant_user2.jpg\" alt=\"Ruth, CI-Nutzerin und begeisterte Musikerin\" width=\"253\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nWie hat sich deine Musikwahrnehmung ge\u00e4ndert, seit du Cochlea-Implantate tr\u00e4gst?<\/strong><br \/>\nAm Anfang klang Musik ganz anders. Nicht schlecht, einfach ungewohnt. Die Erfahrung des H\u00f6rens und Zuh\u00f6rens mit Implantaten ist ganz anders als mit den eigenen Ohren. Mit der Zeit<br \/>\nhat es sich wirklich gelohnt, denn Musik h\u00f6rte sich viel klarer an.<\/p>\n<p>Ich konnte Instrumente wie Fl\u00f6ten und Tamburine erkennen, die ich vorher nicht hatte wahrnehmen k\u00f6nnen. Ich konnte den Gesang deutlich h\u00f6ren und den Liedtexten folgen. Mir ist auch wichtig, dass Musik sch\u00f6n klingt &#8211; und ich bin froh, dass ich das mit meinem Cochlea-Implantat erreicht habe. Mein zweites Implantat war \u00fcberw\u00e4ltigend, weil ich endlich Musik in Stereo h\u00f6ren konnte! Das war wirklich lebensver\u00e4ndernd.<br \/>\n<!-- <strong>What was the biggest challenge in your rehabilitation? What role did music play in this process? Which <\/strong><strong>other tools or tips contributed to your rehabilitation?<\/strong>\nMusic was, possibly, a bigger factor in my rehabilitation than speech! I found speech quite easy and natural to pick up through everyday conversations\u2014but music was a challenge that required practice. I used my favorite songs as a \u201cbarometer.\u201d After my activation, and each time I had a tuning appointment, I\u2019d listen to the songs until my ear adjusted. I also pushed myself to listen to new music. This was much easier by the time of my second implant, with music streaming and online videos widely available. I still consider myself undergoing \u201crehabilitation,\u201d but I prefer to think of it as an ongoing journey of discovery and challenge. I use Apple Music for my playlists. Sometimes I just play a favorite song and wait to see what recommendations it throws up next. I love the lyrics feature, and how much new content I can discover and enjoy.\n\n&nbsp; --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kannst du dich an einen besonders denkw\u00fcrdigen Moment auf deiner H\u00f6rreise erinnern? Gab es einen <\/strong><strong>besonderen Moment, der mit Musikgenuss verbunden war?<\/strong><br \/>\nJa! Als ich dachte, die Kopfh\u00f6rer seien kaputt, weil ich auf jeder Seite etwas anderes h\u00f6ren konnte. Ich schickte eine E-Mail an das Unternehmen, um mich zu beschweren, und merkte dann, dass nicht die Kopfh\u00f6rer kaputt waren, sondern ich auf einmal Stereoklang h\u00f6rte. Jetzt liebe ich es, in Stereo zu h\u00f6ren! Ich kann mir einen Film mit Kopfh\u00f6rern ansehen und zum Beispiel die Richtung h\u00f6ren, in die ein Auto f\u00e4hrt. So etwas f\u00fchlt sich f\u00fcr mich nach wie vor neu und sehr eindrucksvoll an.<\/p>\n<p><!-- <strong>What motivates you to share tips and support other recipients of hearing implants, e.g., as a mentor of the HearPeers community?<\/strong>\nThe MED-EL HearPeers community is fantastic\u2014it\u2019s a safe and respectful space where diversity of experiences is celebrated. I\u2019ve asked a range of questions on there on topics like good headphones to use with implants, music perception through one and two implants, and so on. I love having a peer network to share tips and experiences with. There\u2019s a real sense of camaraderie; everybody is genuinely interested in helping and learning from each other. Through the pandemic, we\u2019ve organized monthly coffee mornings, and it has been lovely to meet new people face to face\u2014albeit virtually\u2014and share those experiences. As I said earlier, I\u2019ve never known other deaf people who are interested in experiencing music. The challenges we go through are humbling, but also inspiring.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<strong>What is the most important tip or advice that you would give other recipients of hearing implants? Do you have any special advice with respect to music appreciation?<\/strong>\nI can say only one thing, really, and that is to practice and keep an open mind. You get out what you put in. --><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hast du einen besonderen Rat f\u00fcr MusikerInnen mit H\u00f6rverlust?<\/strong><br \/>\nJa &#8211; arbeite mit dem, was du hast; konzentriere dich nicht auf das, was du nicht hast. Nur so w\u00e4chst man \u00fcber sich selbst hinaus.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Eine Musikerin mit H\u00f6rverlust zu sein ist anders, nicht schlechter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!-- <strong>Tell us about your music history\u2014 how did you come to play the clarinet and what fascinates you about that instrument?<\/strong>\nI have played the clarinet since the age of eight. I have remained at the level of competent amateur for many years, and I am happy with that. I stopped playing after college, having done my exams and been in the school orchestra, then started again after university and my second implant, but just for fun. The clarinet is a beautiful-sounding instrument and I play for pleasure. I love how versatile it is, with an extensive range\u2014perfect for classical music, blues, and jazz. More recently, I have started to play the alto sax. I went to a lunchtime charity concert in my local church, at which a group of saxophonists were performing. I turned to my partner and said \u201cI need to get one of those.\u201d We drove straight to the nearest town and I tried a soprano, alto, and tenor sax. I plumped for the alto\u2014mainly because the weight and sound were good for me, but also because I already play one Bb instrument (the soprano and tenor sax are Bb; the alto is Eb). Did I mention that I like a challenge?\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<strong>What inspires you to make music? Do you have a music idol?<\/strong>\nI play for the sheer pleasure of it, and also because I can always improve. My music idol is my music\nteacher of three years. She plays clarinet and alto sax wonderfully, and we have adapted virtual lessons\nover the pandemic, for example by recording and sharing sections of tunes, and using a Trello board for exercises. She also helped me so much when I decided to take part in the \u201cAural Diversity\u201d initiative in\n2019; we chose tunes together and rewrote the music in different keys and across different ranges. I do love a few notable clarinet and sax players\u2014Benny Goodman, Peanuts Hucko, Artie Shaw, Charlie Parker, and Paul Desmond\u2014to name but a few!\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<strong>How do you learn and study for a music piece? Has this changed over the years, especially after being implanted?<\/strong>\nI am more meticulous now than I used to be. I used to hate practicing scales, but I know it is very good for my form and my listening, as well as for getting to know pieces that make use of particular keys. I tend to break down pieces and focus on improving sections, especially when I only have a short time to practice. I also listen to the quality of the sound I\u2019m making far, far more now. When I was younger, I\u2019d just have a bash and play straight through pieces. The younger brain can get away with this; the older brain has to be more patient!\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<strong>Describe the feelings you have when playing the clarinet in front of others.<\/strong>\nNervous and, at the same time, incredibly free. It feels like an out-of-body experience because you imagine the music traveling to your audience. When you\u2019re playing at home by yourself, you are in your body, listening to and feeling all your mistakes.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<strong>Where did you experience your favorite live performance since being a recipient of cochlear implants? What made it special for you?<\/strong>\nCarole King, live at Hyde Park in 2016, with my parents and two sisters. She played the Tapestry album in full, for the first time. We sang along, especially my mother, who sang every word, and we all had tears running down our faces!\n\n&nbsp; --><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nWie hat dein pers\u00f6nliche Geschichte als H\u00f6rimplantattr\u00e4gerin zu deinem Hobby als Musikerin beigetragen?<\/strong><br \/>\nIn den letzten zehn Jahren, seit ich mein zweites Implantat trage und die Klarinette wiederentdeckt habe, habe ich es sehr genossen, \u00fcber <a href=\"https:\/\/de.hearpeers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hearpeers<\/a> und die <a href=\"https:\/\/www.musicianswithhearingloss.org\/wp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Association of Adult Musicians with Hearing Loss<\/a> (AAMHL) andere geh\u00f6rlose Musikerinnen und Musiker kennenzulernen. Ich habe mich auch an der audiologischen Forschung im Zusammenhang mit Musik und Implantaten beteiligt. 2017 lernte ich Andrew Hugill kennen, den inspirierenden Gr\u00fcnder von &#8222;Aural Diversity&#8220;, und nahm an einigen Konzerten im Jahr 2019 teil.<\/p>\n<p>Dann besuchte ich 2018 die zweite &#8222;Music and Cochlear Implants&#8220; Konferenz in Montreal. Dort wurde ich Teil einer Forschungsgruppe, die 2019 einen wissenschaftlichen Beitrag im Magazin &#8222;Frontiers in Neuroscience&#8220; ver\u00f6ffentlichte. Derzeit arbeite ich mit Dr. Kate Gfeller an einer weiteren Studie und hoffe, diese Forschungsergebnisse auf der dritten &#8222;Music and CIs&#8220; Konferenz an der University of Cambridge in diesem Jahr pr\u00e4sentieren zu k\u00f6nnen. Was ich aus all dem mitnehme? Eine geh\u00f6rlose Musikerin zu sein ist anders, aber nicht schlechter. Ich nehme Musik anders wahr, erlebe sie anders und spiele sie wahrscheinlich auch anders. Die unglaubliche harte Arbeit, die ich auf meinem bisherigen Weg geleistet habe, ist ein Beweis f\u00fcr meine St\u00e4rke und mein Durchhalteverm\u00f6gen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hast du ein musikalisches Lieblingswerkzeug, eine App, ein Musikst\u00fcck oder ein Lied aus deiner Spotify-Playlist, das du mit uns teilen m\u00f6chtest?<\/strong><br \/>\nMeine Lieblings-App ist Apple Music, ich habe aber auch schon Amazon Prime Music und Spotify verwendet. Mir gef\u00e4llt, dass alle drei Plattformen bei den meisten Liedern eine Funktion f\u00fcr Liedtexte anbieten. Ich kann auch eine App namens <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.bitcount.cleartune&amp;hl=en&amp;gl=US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cleartune <\/a>empfehlen. Als Holzbl\u00e4serin ohne Klavier ist das unverzichtbar! Ich habe auch ein paar Jahre lang Gesangsunterricht genommen und fand eine Stimm-App dabei sehr n\u00fctzlich.<\/p>\n<p><!-- <strong>What is your favorite sound?<\/strong>\nThe little sighs of contentment that my dog makes when I\u2019m scratching his tummy; onions sizzling in a pan, which indicates that dinner is cooking; and the birds singing in the garden at the end of a summer evening.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<strong>During the Covid-19 pandemic with social distancing and increasing isolation for millions of people worldwide, how has music helped you to deal with different daily challenges?<\/strong>\nI listen to music less during the pandemic than I did before, simply because I used to wear headphones\nwhen out and about, walking to places, to and from the bus stop for work, etc. I now wear headphones all day every day for video calls. I tend to listen to music more at the weekend now, when I\u2019m relaxed. I play the clarinet and the sax far more. I still have weekly lessons and I practice little and often and\nrecord myself. It gives me a sense of achievement to be able to do this, and a complete physical and mental break from being on-screen.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<strong>What are your top-three \u201cmotivational\u201d songs in life?<\/strong>\nDonna Donna\u2014Joan Baez,\nThe Times They Are A-Changin\u2014Bob Dylan,\nSympathy for the Devil\u2014Rolling Stones.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<strong>From your point of view, what can people without hearing loss learn from recipients of hearing implants regarding personal motivation and the pursuit of one\u2019s dreams?<\/strong>\nI would say: look at how hard we work, and how we turn musical understanding and appreciation into a lifelong journey\u2014I would hope they find it very inspiring! There is no right or wrong way of listening to and enjoying music, but both things are important. Also, if you are a producer of music, look at\nhow accessible your practices are. Do you provide your song lyrics? Do your spaces and performance venues provide a variety of spaces for people with different needs and preferences?\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<strong>What are your hopes, dreams, and wishes for your personal future?<\/strong>\nI am currently working in my dream job at the Bodleian Libraries, University of Oxford, but I haven\u2019t met most of my colleagues in person yet! So, it will be very special when I can finally visit the buildings and meet people. I also have a dream to renovate my house, which is an unusual project since it is part of a 200-year-old hotel (and is quite crumbly at the moment!).
